Poached pears, not sure why, but it reminds me of my grandparents. Maybe just because it is such a traditional and delicious dish! So when my dear neighbour brought me a big bag full of pears from her friends garden, I knew I had to come up with a great recipe.
Using elderberry juice gives the pears a dark purple almost black colour, soooo beautiful! And not only beautiful, but elderberry juice is very healthy too. To stay on the healthy side, I did not use any refined sugar to sweeten the pears, just a little bit of honey. If you want the pears to be vegan, simply replace the honey with a sweetener of your choice.
To give the pears a bit more of an autumn touch, I added quite some spices that give flavour and smell wonderful! I used cinnamon, ginger, orange and clove, a perfect combination!
The pears are very versatile, you can eat them as desert, together with your food or even as topping for your porridge in the morning.
Be sure not to throw away the juice, it is full of flavour. Leave it as it is or thicken it by further reducing it while cooking. I promise you that you will not regret that.
