One of the great things of living in The Hague is that the dunes are around the corner. I love to spend my time there with the sound of the ocean in the background. And not only that… there is also great food growing in the dunes!
Earlier this year I picked elderflower blossom and made my own elderflower syrup. At this moment the dunes are full of beautiful orange berries, known as sea buckthorn. These little berries are full of vitamines, minerals, flavonoids and fatty acids. They fit really well in a healthy lifestyle.
So on a rainy Monday morning Myrthe from the great website Simplify Your Life and myself took our gloves and pruning shears and headed for the dunes. It was a very rainy morning, but as soon as we arrived at the spot there was nothing but a clear and sunny sky. Magic!
Within a few meters we found lots and lots of sea buckthorn bushes… and we both got ourselves a bag full. A little tip: they are easier to pick if you put them in the freezer for 2 days. They will also lose a bit of their acidity due to the freezing process.
Happy and satisfied we went for a nice walk in the dunes and on the beach, and we treated ourselves to a nice lunch with a view! Did I already tell you how we met? No, I did not… we met on Instagram. Lovely how you can find such great people on social media. Even better when you meet in real!
Back home I made a great sea buckthorn berry jam… and there is more to come… vinegar, more jam and maybe even a chutney!
